THE WAIRAU CONTENT.

Tkk election yesterday oreated a great deal of interest, and the pro* ceedinga throughout the day were very orderly. The first result was known about 6.30 p.m., and the various returns as they were posted up m the window of this office were watched by a large assemblage of people. At about nine o'clock Mr Buiok was leading with a majority of over 100, and then the excitement was intensified by uncertainty as to the voting m the Sounds district. Some doubt existed as to the strength of this part of the electorate, and the public, recognising that this was Mr Mills' stronghold, were swayed by the eager discussion as to whether Mr Buick would be able to maintain his lead m the fac9 of the voting m that locality. The crowd ~ remained m the streets up till a late hour, gradually dispersing about 11 o'clock, when it became known that the returns would take some time to reacb! town. The result of five small polling places m the Sounds came to hand about 2.30 a.m. They reduced Mr Buick's majority to 19, and then it was generally recognised that his chances were doomed, and that the voting at the remaining booths m the Sounds Would place Mr Mills at the head of the poll. It was confidently expected that Mr Mills would wiu by a small majority. A large number of people congregated m front of the Express office during the morning to learn,the final result. Intense excitement prevailed and eheeis were given as it was seen that the result wways y no longer m doubt, as each further return came m from the Sounds it increased Mr Mills' majority, the final result being: — Mills ... ... 2072 Buiok ... ... 2014 Mr 8.
