The result of the election for the county of Cheviot has been the return of Mr. Weld by a majority of more than three to one. If further proof were wanting of the apathy existing among the public in these matters, we have it in the fact that in this wide district not more than thirtyone electors came to the poll. The poll was declared on Monday, with the following result. For Mr. Weld, 24—Mr. Brown 7. At Mr. Ross's station no vote was recorded, and at Oxford we believe only two. The writs have come down for the last election of the series, to the Returning Officer at Timaru; Friday the 22nd instant is the day fixed for the nomination, and Monday the 25th for the poll. Messrs. F. Jollie and Poigndestre are the only candidates as yet publicly announced in the field. The members of the Lyttelton Companies of the Canterbury Rifle Volunteers are particularly requested to attend the parade this afternoon, at halfpast five, as arrangements will be then made for the distribution of the rifles for ball practice. We are requested also to mention that joining members attending will be sworn in by the senior officer. All arms and accoutrements already issued are to be produced at this parade for the purpose of inspection. An accident which terminated fatally occurred on Saturday, on the Island, Kaiapoi, to a man of the name of McEwen. It appears that the unfortunate man was riding on the shafts of a dray heavily laden timber. While going down a sharp declivity the timber shifted forward, and some pieces of scantling struck the deceased on the neck and head, causing instant death. An accidental fire on Sunday afternoon destroyed the _ buildings on _ Messrs. R. & G. Rhodes' dairy station at Ahuriri, Lake Ellesmere. We have no particulars of the origin of the fire, or of the extent of damage done, except that together with the house and usual furniture, all the dairy plant of cheese presses, vats, &c, was lost, and between three and four tons of this season's produce of cheese.
