'■ Vagrancy. — Yesterday, at the Resident Magistrate's Court, a man named James ■E vers was charged with a breach of the Vagrant Act 1869, and committed to gaol for a month, : The Dioeama of the American war was again exhibited on Saturday evening, and, but fop the heavy rain that fell, no doubt there would have been a good house. As it was, the attendance was rather scanty. This troupe left yesterday by the Star of : the South; Waipukubau. — The Rev. Mr. Taylor, of the United Methodist body, "" accompanied by Mrs. Taylor, arrived on Sunday., in the Rangatira, Mr. Taylor has been stationed in Christchurch, and he proceeds this morning by Cobb's coach to his new field of labour — Waipukurau, in this province. Napier Debating Club. — A meeting of this Club was held on the evening of Thursday last, in the Masonic Hall. The subject for debate was, — "Is the modern system of the division of labor favorable to the highest interests of mankind." It was opened by the Rev. G. Morice in the affirmative, and by Mr. Carlisle iv the negative ; after which a spirited discussion ensued, joined in by all the members. The votes proving equal, a casting vote' on the side of the affirmative was given by the chairman. The meeting closed at about 11 o'clock. This society is one that should certainly be encouraged; , as being both interesting and instructive. Young men in particular should avail themselves of such an opportunity of profitably and pleasantly spending ,m evening., . '
