HAWKE'S BAY HERALD "WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25, 1863.

We understand that steps have lately been taken, and are far advanced, for the formation of an Agricultural Society — the main object of which is, by means of an annual exhibition, the awarding of prizes, & c, to encourage the breeding and rearing of good stock. The want of some such institution has been long felt in our country districts ; and we trust that the efforts of the promoters of the Society will be crowned with the success they merit. Other provinces have been beforehand with us in this direction, and have reaped the advantage of it. It is not, however, too late for Hawke's Bay to begin ; and we feel sure that the first exhibition of its home-bred and imported stock will prove that it has long possessed sheep and cattle of a quality to vie with those of any portion of the colony ; while the fertility of its alluvial and limestone land will be proved in the condition of the stock exhibited. The great advantage to inland settlers of meeting annually to compare the results of their experiments in stock-breeding with those of their neighbors, need not be dwelt upon ; much less the importance of thus encouraging the enterprising importers of fresh blood. This, we presume, is the primary object of the promoters of the movement ; but we trust that prizes will also be awarded for the best cereals and grass seed produced — indeed, that no article of agricultural produce will be excluded from the shows of the Society. We learn that it is intended, before long, to call a general meeting for the purpose of framing rules and regulations ; also, that it has been proposed to hold the Annual Exhibition alternately at Havelock or Clive — at whichsoever of the two a suitable piece of land may be offered to the Society — and at Waipukurau, where a site has already been given by Mr. Russell.
