Refusal of Licexse. — At Hie annual licensing meeting, Waipukurau, the license of Robert Hollis, for a liouss at Patan.^ata, was refused under the following circumstances : — The application havirg been under consideration, was granted, or jnst about to be granted ; but the Bench considered it necessary to add the usual caution with i*egard to selling to natives ; upon which the applicant very coolly told their worships that if lie did not sell to natives, the license was not worth having — the number of Europeans from whom he anticipated support beir.g so comparatively few in number. Under such circumstance- — the applicant deliberately avowing his intention of breaking the law — the Bench had no other alternative than to refuse his certificate.

Attempted Bobbery. — Late on the evening of Saturday, the 26th tilt., an attempt was made burglariously to enter the premises of Messrs. Eich & Frame, butchers.. The shopman, who was at the time in the Royal Hotel, having been infonmd that such an attempt was being made, ran out and saw a soldier partially within the Avindow and ■with something in his hand. The soldier immediately decamped, and could not be recognised, but, according to the shopman, some words passed, cither on the one side or the other, between the runaway and Lance Corporal Tiff en, who at the time was standing at a distance of some three or four yards from tiie window that had been forced. On Tuesday the latter appeared to answer a charge of being accessory to the attempted theft, but as he accounted with an air of probability for his being on the spot at the time, and the evidence against him being very feeble, the case was dismissed,
