WILD CATS SHOT IN SCOTLAND.

Lovers of natural history will be interested to know that two wild cats have been shot in Scotland. For several years past theseanimalshave been supposed to be extinct. Jn 1877 a couple of young oneswere takfin from a nest in Sutherlandshire and presented to the Royal Zoological Society. Their keeper there pronounced them the most absolutely untamable animals under his control. Since their death the Zoological Society have been anxious to procure successors, but has failed to do so. Hence it was assumed that they were extinct. All these survivals of wild life are profoundly interesting to zoologists, who are looking with grent curiosity to the attempt now being made to perpetuate the wild white cattle of Britain at the Zooloigcal Gardens. A wild bull was presented from LordFerrers's herd at Char Jey, near Uttoxeter, waa presented to the gardens last summer, and a wild heifer from Lord Tankervill's herd at Chillingham has now been added. The Zoological Society will try to procure specimens from the other herds— Mr Assheton-Pmith's at Vaynol, the Duke of Hamilton's at Cadow, Lady Lothian's at Blickling, and Sir Charles Shakerley's at Somerford, near Congleton. All these breeds have much in common, with small differentiating peculiarities, such as the colour of their " pbiuts"and the shape of their horns.' Zoologists hope by crossing the various strains bo arrive afc the original type, which is older than English civilisation and from which a l l these species are derived.
