THE Grey River Argus PUBLISHED DAILY. THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 1883.

The overland mail from Christchurch did not arrive laat evening as usual ; but it may be expected to arrive this evening, as it left the Bealey at 3.40 p.m. yesterday to catch the Hokitika coach. The new winch for winding in the tow rope on board the tug Dispatch was tried yesterday and answered very well. As fast as the rope is wound in it goes down a hatchway. The winch is a great improvement and will lead to a great economy of time.

In the House last night, on the Estimates, on the item in Class 11, lighthouses and harbor works, £64,866, Duncan objected to the item for Westport, Greymouth, and Hokitika harbors, saying those places should be made to rate themselves, as he complained that Oamaruhadtodo for its harbour. Fish objected to some of these items, and urged the House report progress. The 'vote lighthouses, £24,900 passed, and progress was reported on the harbor works vote. The House at 3.30 a.m. until 7.30 p.m. . In the Police Court report published yesterday a mistake occurred through a page of "copy" being omitted, andthefol-; lowing cases were left out : — Michael j Phillips (rate collector, County Council); v. Paul Beckman. — Claim £23, for rates. — Jridgment for plaintiff with costs. The ) same v. George Barton. — Claim, £1 4s! for rates dve — Judgment for amount, claimed with costs. And through the mis-' take above referred to, the cause of action; in the case of Guinness v. Grubb should have been " professional services" instead of " rates," as printed. ; A valuable property consisting of 2000 acres of land at Totara Flat and Grey Junction will be sold by auction if not otherwise disposed of before the be-i ginning of September. Besides the land,; there are 250 head of cattle, 40 horses, and the usual farm implements. Private tenders are called for a rather valuable property in the Reefton district.; Lot 1 consists of Breen's Hotel, half-a-: mile from Reefton on the road to Grey-; mouth. The second lot comprises 80 acres valuable land, bordering on the Grey road. The third lot is the Newcastle coal mine, a very inexpensive one to work. I The funeral of the late Charles Buckley! will take place this afternoon, the cortege forming at the Masonic Hall at 2 o'clock^ arid then proceeding to the cemetery. ! It appears that the largest contribution^ to the recent flood came down the Ahauraj river. There .was a great quantity of snow on the mountains at the head of the! river, and the warm wind and rain to-j gether helped to bring the snow down thej river. The flood in the Arnold and the big Grey was not so remarkable ; while' the water in the Ahaura was higher thari has been seen since the bridge was built. : - Mails for the Astralian Colonies, United Kingdom, and Continent of Europe, via Hobart, close at the Bluff by the Tara•yera on Saturday 18th, at 11 a.m. | An emergency meeting of the Greyr mouth Lodge, No. 1233, E.C., is to be held at the Masonic hall, at 2 p.m., this day, to follow the remains of the late Broj Buckley to the grave. On Monday night (says the West Coast Times) a Mrs Duske and her daughter had a rough experience in the bush near Rimu; They left their residence, which is on the Ross road beyond Rimu, in the evening to look for some cows which had been feeding in the bush The weather was very severe, for it was raining and blowing vigorously, and they soon lost their way. Search for them was promptly instituted, tiie miners turning out en masse. The whistle at Mr Maher's mill was kept going, and the horns with which the Rimu coach drivers make such hideous noises, were for once turned to some useful purpose. Both Mrs Duske and the girl were found early in the morning, the former suffering somewhat more severely than her companion' from the exposure. They were not more than a half mile from the road, which speaks volumes for the nature of the country. We (Inaivgalvua Times) learn that Mr W. ! H. Jones and Mr A. A. S. Menteath have entered into partnership as barrister's and solicitors, and purchased the practice of Mr William Perkins, Greymouth. Mr Jones will leave Reefton on Tuesday week for the purpose of conducting the professional business in Greymouth, Mr Menteath conducting the business here, j At a meeting held at Reefton on Moiiday evening to consider what steps should be taken to obtain legal redress against the publishers or others of an article headed " Spurts " inserted in the Dunedin Momitvg Herald of July 21st, it was resolved : ' ' That a committee of five be appointed to take legal opinion as to whether an action for damages was sustainable against the Morning Herald ; and,' if so, to take steps accordingly." The United States Survey steamer Blake has reumed from a winter cruise for deep sea exploration between the Bermudas and Bahamas. On January 19, in lat. 16 deg. 41m. N., lon. 66 deg. 24m. W., about 105 miles north -west of St Thomas, there was found the greatest depth ever measured in the Atlantic, or 4561 fathoms. The place was about 89 miles south-west of the place where the Challenger made her deepest sounding of 3862 fathoms.

No article, imported or otherwise, which is alleged to possess similar ingredients to Wolfe's Schnapps, is aught else than a pernicious humbug. The public will be guided accordingly and shun the trap. — [Advt.]
