PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS.

Yesterday was the day of general election throughout the new Province of Westland for members to represent the various constituencies in the Provincial Council. Greymouth had to return three members, and as there were five candidates there, was some considerable excitement. The friends of the various candidates deserve credit for the manner in ! which; they canvassed the electors for votes, while the virtues and future intensions of the candidates' were fully made (known by means of placards, cards, &c, liberally displayed about town. Promises of good things iii store for Westland were, abundant everywhere, in fact, to believe the usual election placards, harbor works, roads, bridges, water-races, &c., were to be immediately undertaken if certain candidates were returned. It is to be hoped that now all the excitement is over the gentlemen elected will remember a fraction of the' promises which they made, or their Committees made for them, and endeavor to c&rry them into effect. The j election presented no peculiar features — it was conducted throughout with a display of the same good feeling which always characterises such events in Greymouth. It wa3 nearly 5.30 before the | result of the poll was declared, but a large j crowd remained in anxious expectation to hear the result, which was postedup as follows :— ■ . . r Mr H. H. When the poll was declared, Mr Lahman returned his warmest thanks to those who had voted for him, and placed, him; in that honorable position. He would promise them that he would endeavor to: be deserving of the confidence they had reposed in him, and he ; hoped to be able to prove to those who did not vote for him that they were, wrong. ., Messrs WopicoCK and Wtokes also returned thanks for the honor which had been done them. . ;: ■ ■:.'■•- --: Mr Fox thanked, those who had voted for him, but stated that he was not at all surprised that he had not been returned.
