KING'S HORSE WINS A RACE

There uu s a record crowd at Ihe Derby. Hundreds of Australian and New Zealand soldiers motored to the course. The Royal party travelled liy train, and drove from Epsom. They had a cordial reception. Cheers were renewed an hour later when Viceroy won. Light showers at midday tended to make tho dry ground treacherous, but it did not spoil the comfort of .spectators. Panther remained a strong favourite. There was an enthusiastic demonstration when the King's horse, A'iceroy, won the Stewards' Handicap. Donoghue was riding. There were nine runners. It, was the first time that the King had attended a race meeting or entered a horse since the war. Panther's restlessness delayed the start. He got away badly, but was never prominent. In tho race, Paper Aloney led from Roamec, AVhite Heat nnd Grand Parade with Panther fifth and Coriolanus last . Rounding Tottenham Corner Paper Afoner was still leading, followed by Grand Parade, Buchan, and Sir Douglas, while Panther was nearly last. When close home Grand Parade challenged, and won nn exciting race. Sir Douglas was fourth, Tangier s fifth, and Panther ninth.
