PILGRIM'S AWFUL FATE.

The annual festival at the shrine on the summit of Asama-Yama, a lofty volcano in the island of Hondo, Japan, was attended by a great disaster. Hundreds of pilgrims had ascended the mount, and wore going through some of the ceremonies incidental to the festival, when with terrible suddenness the volcano burst into a .state of eruption. The outbreak was accompanied by a tremendous report, which was heard as far as Tokjo, with is 90 miles away. Following this terrific explosion came an overwhelming shower of molten lava and ashes. Rescue parties had the greatest difficulty in making their way to the summit, end on arrival there they found that many lives had been lost. Most of the bodies haid been completely shrivelled up by the hot lava, while those of other victims had had all the clothes burn en off them. It is not yet possible to say how many perished. AN EX-GOVERNOR SENTENCED. General Rheinbot has been sentenced to a year's imprisonment for misappropriation of funds while Governor of Moscow. NOTABLE GOLF PLAYER BEATEN The feature of last week's play in the contest for the amateur golf championship was the defeat of Mr John Ball by Mr R. Crumack, a comparative outsider, by 4 up and 2 to play. Mr Ball had the distinction of having Avon the British amateur championship on seven different occasions. COURT-MARTIALLED AND SHOT. A message from San Diego, on the borders of Mexico, reports that Captain Francisco Viza, one of the Mexican commanders, was court-martialled for having killed an American soldier who was serving under him. The prisoner was found guilty, and having been condemned to death was shot. SUNSTAR MAY NEVER RACE AGAIN. Sunstar, winner of the Derby lastweek, will probably never race again. After the race the colt was led before the Royal box by his owner, Mr J. .13. Joel, when he showed unmietakeable signs of lameness. He was examined by veterinary surgeons, who said that there was only a slight chance of recovery.
