ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

Brown, a City Councillor, was rather severely cut about the the head by splinters, consequent on an accident on the coastal steamer Waiotahi this morning. A portable engine, weighing about five tons, was beiog hoisted on board, when tbe mast breaking, precipitated it on deck. A lumper was knocked down by the falling engine, but escaped being crushed by the wheels. Thia Day. A. Bearpark, a remittance man, died suddenly last night under circumstances suggestive of arsenical poisoning. Oubistchubch, January 26. William Carboy, a well-known farmer at Loburn, met his death by accident tbis morning. He was on a dray loading grain, and 6ome of the sheaves slipped on to tbe horse's back causing it to bolt. Part of the load came off over tbe front, and Carboy fell with it in front of one of the wheels, which passed over his chest. His injuries were so severe that he lived only half an hour. He was about 70 years of age, and leaves a widow and grown up family. Oamaku, January 26. The body of the young woman Downey, who has been missing from her home since Thursday last, was found in the Waitaki River tbis evening, four miles below Kurow.
