THE OAKS STAKES

CLASSIC TO SUN STREAM

Many hundreds of racegoers in private cars, some of which were on the road for the first time in more than three years, caused the biggest road jam at Newmarket ever known. Every road from all directions leading to the course was choked for about a mile when the cars met at a bottleneck near the entrance to the-race-course. Conditions were chaotic, and the motor-cycle police tried' to get the j traffic into single line, but progress was so slow that hundreds of people pafked their cars on the roadside and walked the rest of the journey. The large car park, which had been closed since 1,942, was packed long before the first race. Following was the result of: THE OAKS STAKES, a sweepstake of £100 each, with £2000 added; for three-year-old fillies; 1_- miles. Lord. Derby's-b f Sun Stream, by Hyperion—Drift, by Swynford, 9.0 (H. Wragg) ...... 1 H.H. Aga* Khan's f Naishapurr 9.0 . .2 Mrs. Macdonald-Buchanan's f Solar Princess, 9.0 ................. 3 Won by a short head, with threequarters of a length between second and third. Par Excellence was fourth. Time, 2.30. ■ . ■ ' • In one of the most, exciting classic .finishes ever contested, Sun Stream won by the narrowest margin. Both she and Naishapur finished brilliantly. Sun Stream thus completed a notable double for her owner, Lord Derby, and trainer, W. Earl, she hav-,-ing won the One Thousand Guineas last month. H. Wragg rode the. win-.' ncr in each of her classic successes. - Lord Derby' had won the Oaks previously with Toboggan (1928) and Wragg had earlier won on Rockfel (1931) and on Commotion (1941). The trainer, however, had "not previously led in a winner of this, particular classic.

.Drift, the dam of Sun Stream, was, herself a good winner, and at the stud she produced earlier Fairhaven (now at the stud), Tide-way (One Thousand Guineas), Heliopolis (now in America), Off Shore, Seven Seas. and Sun Stream. As a two-year-old Sun Stream won the Bedford Stakes and Queen Mary Stakes.—"Binocular."
