WIN FOR NASRULLAH

TAKES CAVENHAM STAKES

Handicapped as the. top two-year-old in England last season,.'Nasrullah proved a big disappointment when the three-year-old classics came along. However, he finally won the Cavenham Stakes at Newmarket in August when ridden by . Gordon Richards. Commenting upon ' the performance. London "Sporting Life" states that it is doubtful whether Nasrullah made many new friends by the. manner in which he raced. Richards had other winning rides during.the, day, but this one, if only momentarily, was probably the least comfortable. Nevertheless, it was almost without effort that Nasrullah responded when asked to become a little more interested .in the proceedings. The rider of Triumvir deliberately allowed Nasrullah to take the lead, in the hope, that he would begin to slack, as usual once he got to the front, but Richards persuaded Nasrullah to keep going.. By Nearco (who was unbeaten), Nasrullah is from Mumtaz Begum, a half-sister to Nimazi. Costly Slip.—The stewards of the English Jockey Club fined the wellknown trainer F. Butters .£25 for not reporting-to them the fact that -in the preceding June he had entered and run Majid, a gelding, in a race confined to fillies. ! , First Colt.— Malmsey, dam of Lady Derby, Foxcatcher, etc., recently produced a colt foal to Defoe. It.is the first.colt dropped by the . Clarenceux mare, and will be the last of the _Defoes, the sire being now dead. LiKe Foxcatcher, the foal is the ■ property of Mr J. H. Marshall, of Titahi Bay. Turned Out. —The intention to operate on Pell Mell for a rupture was not proceeded with, and the Man's Pal gelding has been turned out. It is problematical whether he .will ever race again, which is bad luck for his owner, Mr. S. J. • Newland, of Wellington, and for trainer. P. H. Reardon. Incidentally, the latter is bringing along nicely a grey colt by Theio from Gaimint, who will race :as Thexo Ll|or "Riccarton.—The Trentham trainer P. Burgess will' leave for Riccarton on Wednesday night* . He ■ wll take Tara King and Maharajah, the former being in the Derby and the latter in the Otaio Plate, and he will probably ride both horses himself. The stable apprentice, J. Garth, will be on Te Kawiti in the' New Zealand Cup. Canterbury Cup.—Kindergarten goes south to Riccarton on Monday night, and will be ridden by P. Spratt in the Canterbury Cup on the. second day. Jannie Girl and Black Simon, who are engaged in the Spring Nursery on the opening day of the C.J.C. Carnival will accompany the champion. Spratt will ride one of the two-year-olds and N. B. Holland the other. Team of Four.—W. J. Bromby has made arrangements to take Foxcatcher, Typhoon, Martarma Rose, and Mine Host south on Wednesday night. A. Goodman's stable will be represented by Bridge Acre, the Foxbndge filly being engaged in the Welcome Stakes. Turned Out.—P. Burgess has accorded all his two-year-olds a spell and will not take them in hand till about Christmas time. A newcomer to his team is a three-year.-old gelding by North Island from Moutoa Treasury, thus a half-brother to the defunct Master Lackham. North Island is an unraced son of Bulandshar and the Juggernaut mare Joanfax (dam of Jonathan and Punarua). His son is a low-set bay who strides out very attractively in his work.

An Addition.— The Trentham trainer A. Sager has taken in hand * a filly by Croupier from Waiorua, the dam being by Waiua from the Elevation mare Leola. , . Big Type.—Golden Boy, a big, upstanding three-year-old chestnut gelding by Singara from Our Rose, has been taken in hand by A. W. Wheeler at Trentham. Singara is?- a son of Whirlwind and imported Legality, dam also of Bambury, Whirling, and Marshall Hall, and Our Rose (by Surveyor) is a daughter of Roseland (by Finland). Golden Boy is thus well bred, but he has an enlarged hock that might count against him. New Purchase.— Mr. F. Barrell, of Wellington, has; purchased • a filly by Broiefovt from Fairfax, a Limond mare from imported Joanfax, who gave the Turf that grand performer Jonathan. Royal Counsellor,' also owned by Mr. Barrell, is at present spelling. Two Delinquents.— Two fines were imposed by the stewards of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting. Club after the Ollivier Handicap had been decided. J. Bryce, jun., the driver of Shadow Maid, was fined £20 for causing Joan Conquest to break, and R. B. Berry, the driver of Pacing Power, was fined £25 for unintentional interference with Shadow Maid. The harshness of the latter penalty was evident when the placings were reversed, Shadow. Maid being promoted to first place at the expense of Pacing Power. .■ ;■ ■ Very Robust. —The Champ and Home Rule, both of whom are owned by Mr. 6. J. Newland, of Wellington,, are at present carrying, a Kery^bright and

robust appearance, and it ■ will probably be some time before they are asked to figure in public. Their trainer, T. R. George, of Masterton leaves for Riccarton on Monday night with Silvio and Indian Sign, and the former is carrying all the polish usually associated with that capable trainer's charges. Silvio will be ridden by H. N. Wiggins at Riccarton. Still in Work. —Amorlad was taken out of the New Zealand Cup as it was feared he had not been- able to get through the necessary preparation ior a two-mile journey. He is being Kept going in view of other engagements that have been made for him. Fit Horse.—A southern- report states that Kevin'has done well since returning from the Wellington Meeting, and he is expected to be a very fit horse for the Cup race at Riccarton. He will be ridden by C. T. Wilson. Very-Useful. —Trimdon, winner of the Novice Stakes, No. 2, at Napier Park, is a grey son of Kincardine and the grey mare Ruinette,' the dam being a full-sister to Araunah, Grand' Sport, etc. He should go much further in the game. . - Injured.—On the Saturday prior to the V.R.C. Derby, .Lawrence (Law Maker—Gay Element), was favourite for the classic. Unfortunately, before the start of the W. S. Cox Plate he got astride a partition used to divide the field into sections, .and bruised his flank and groin. He was withdrawn from the race, and it also necessitated his forgoing his Melbourne Cup engagement, for w.hich he had been ranking second favourite. Restriction.—When . the Australian trotting championships are held at Perth there is a provision that any horse nominated must have registered a certain speed within a stated ■ period. I Those failing 'to reach ■ the required standard are debarred. This eliminates the lower-grade performers. ■ Derby' Winner. —Bonny Bridge, winner of the Trotting Derby ct Addington,- is a half-brother to Captain Morant, Coquette, Safety Pin, and- other winners. A tendency to hit his knees caused most trackwatchers to under-' rate him. .

Broke Up.—Paul Collette is credited with sensational- times mv private, but is apt to be erratic on race days. In the Trotting-Derby: he■>galloped the first two' furlongs" on the-outer ■edge of the track and this !did riot assist him.

Blood Treatmeht.-j-Foxleap, who dropped out of the N.Z. Cup, has not broken; down. She. is being treated for the blood parasite that has . been transmitted to descendants,of The Ace, and will be racing, again during the summer. Fast Passage was given the same treatment before she won the Winter, New Zealand, and Auckland Cups. ■ ■ Oaks Candidate.—Caithness, who is entered for the N.Z. Oaks at Riccarton, is in the hack seven and mile and a quarter events at Otaki on Saturday. It may be significant that the daughter of My Own is also entered for the Seymour Hack Handicap, 1 mile, on the second day at Riccarton.
