LABOUR MAJORITY OF 12

Now that the declarations of results of polling at the General Election have been made, the representation in the new Parliament is shown to be slightly different from that indicated by the preliminary counting of votes immediately after the election. The Government now has a majority of 12, the National Party's strength as the Opposition having increased by 9 (including one Independent National) on its number in the last Parliament;

The declarations of the poll are subject in some cases to amendment byfurther Service votes from overseas. However, it is not expected that the additional votes will affect the actual result as it now stands, even though there is a difference of only 10 votes between the totals of the two leading candidates in Eden, where this slight advantage is now with the Labour candidate (Mr. Anderton). There are still a few Service votes to come, and as it is regarded as likely that Mr. Anderton's lead of ( 10 in Eden may be improved by any additional votes from overseas, his return seems reasonably assured. In that case the number of seats, decided upon the Service votes is increased to six—Eden, Palmerston North, Otaki, Wairarapa, Nelson, and Oamaru, in all of which the civilian voting placed the National candidates (including the Palmerston North Independent, who indicated support for National on a no-confidence motion) in the lead.
