At the Newmarket Summer Meeting the New Derby Stakes, of £100 each with £3000 added (one mile and a half), resulted:— Miss D. Paget's b c Straight Deal, by Solari o—Good Deal, by Apelle, 9.0 1 H.H. Aga Khan's Umiddad, by Dastur—Udaipur, 9.0 2 H.H. Aga Khan's Nasrullah, by Nearco—Mumtaz Begum, 9.0 .. 3 Won by a head; half-length. Time, 2.30 2-5. (Winner trained at Epsom by W. Nightingall.) The population at Newmarket was more than doubled for the Derby. Stranded visitors last night were knocking up inhabitants with offers of £2 to sit for a few hours in armchairs. Scores of people had to stay out all night. Food was scarce in Newmarket, and long queues formed outside every cafe and refreshment room. The Derby fever even spread to prisoners of war camps in Germany. I British prisoners in some camps made I a book on the race. A well-known trainer promised to send them the rer suit-and detailed description immediately the race finished.

Miss Paget, owner of Straight Deal, has been a lavish buyer of bloodstock, but this is the first occasion she has annexed one of the big classics. She is the third member of her sex to'win the Derby, Mrs. Macdonald Buchanan having taken the honours in 1941 with Owen Tudor, and Mrs. G. M. Miller with Mid-day Sun four years earlier. Solario', the sire of Straight Deal, was a son of Gainsborough, and 'during his own racing career won the St. Leger, the Coronation Cup, and Ascot Gold Cup. All three placed horses in the Derby were winners as two-year-olds. In the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in September, Umiddad, who had earlier won the Hadstock Stakes, beat Straight Deal, the latter having been the winner of the Runnymede Plate at Windsor. Nasrullah, who was considei'ed one of the best two-year-olds of the term, also beat Straight Deal in the Coventry Stakes last June, and the Nearco colt was the winner of the Bradley Stakes at Newmarket in August.—"Binocular."
