GROUNDS OF WAR

POLES' FOUR POINTS

DEFENCE PREPARATIONS BEING RUSHED

MAYOR'S APPEAL

MAKING OF AIR-RAID SHELTERS

(Received August 26, 9.40 a.m.)

WARSAW, August 25. Government newspapers publish identical inspired articles setting out the grounds on which Poland would go to w rar: —

(1) If any attempt was made to reunite Danzig with the Reich. - (2) The exclusion of Danzig from the Polish Customs frontiers.

(3) The submission of. Polish, rights in Danzig to a third Power. (4) The deprivation of Poles in Danzig of their rights to national, development.

Poland is rushing her defence preparations as a result of an overnight appeal from the Mayor of Warsaw. Volunteers began at dawn the construction on a large scale of shelters and trenches.

Prohibition is enforced except for the use of the lightest ales. The country's first trial black-out was held at Polnan, which will be in darkness at night until further notice.

Poland is grateful for Britain's r» affirmation of unqualified support.

Political circles are of the opinio^ that President Roosevelt's suggestion of direct negotiation with Germany would be acceptable, but only on a give-and-take basis. Anything else would smack too much of Munich."
