. . WHAKATANE, This Day. An extensive grass and bush fire is raging, at Manawane over an area of four or five thousand acres; Fanned by a strong, south-east wind, the fire is spreadingin the direction of Pikowai.

The homes of soveral settlers and two timber mills were threatened, and in two cases buildings were saved by the assistance of an army of voluntary helpers from'all parts of the district. No losses of stock have been reported so far, but considerable damage has been done to pastures and fences.
