WON BY REFORM CANDIDATE

MAJORITY OF OVER 1400

. The Parnell by-election, held yesterday, to fill -the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. H. R. Jenkins, who entered Parliament in 1928 as a United member, but later' declared his _, independence and afterwards offered himself to the Reform Party for selection, though unsuccessfully, resulted in the election of the Reform candidate, Mr. W. P. Endean, by a majority 0M485 voles over the Government nominee, Mr. W. A. Donald. The Labour candidate, Mr. T, Bloodworth, was third. ,

MR. ENDEAN LEADS FROM STAKT. Mr. Endean took the load from the Start, the first return (from St. Ilclier's 3ay) giving him an advantage of 9 votes over Mr. Donald, and he increased his lead at,all but three of the remaining booths. ParncH (Brighton road), Rcmucra (Green Lane East), and St. Helier's Bay (Presbyterian Haiy were the only booths which gave Mr.^Donald a majority, and in each case his advantage was a small one. At no stage' was Mr. Endean seriously challenged. _ Thcro was the minimum of delay in making known the result of the "election,' the usual' complete arrangements having been made by the Electoral Department. The Chief Electoral Officer (Mr.. G. G. Hodgkins) was stationed at the General Post Office at Wellington, and here, thanks to the efficient co-op-eration of the P. and T. Department . officials, the results w.ere received with great dispatch. The first-return was "■■ handed in at Auckland at 7.20 o'clock, ' and was in the hands of Mr. Hodgkins exactly two*" minutes later. After that the returns came to hand promptly, , and the final result was known a few ' ininutes after 8.30 o'clock. A SMAIiL POLL. The poll was a small one.. There were 14,019 electors' on the roll, and the number of electors who'went to the poll ; yesterday was 9794. .
