PEAT FIRES
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

AUCKLAND, This Day.
In the Patotonga district a peat lire is'burning similar to one that did such damago on tho Hauraki Plains last summer. Sparks from a bush fire last Friday ignited tho grass and peat on Mr. i\ J; Mayn's farm at Maukoro. Hundreds of acres had boon burned by Sunday; ' .On a mile front tho wind is driving the ilamos through the dry grass and peat, and bands of settlors and others are making strenuous efforts to put tho firo out. Drains havo been dammed in order to Hood the land, and trenches arc boing constructed to stay tho spread of tho flames. Back burning is also being carried out.
Fears uro entertained for tho adjoining farms and tho Maukoro mills. Tho largo area of inillablo flux iv tho Hauralu Plains and Thames Valley is like a gigantic smoko screen, and the weather is oxtremoly hot. Bush fires arc in ovidonco in all directions.
