ENGLISH TWO-YEAR-OLDS

The Middle Park Plato decided at the becond October Meeting at Newmarket usually gives a good lino for summing up the two-year-olds in England in regard to Derby possibilities the next year. "Vigilant," of the "London bportsman, ' has the following to say of this year's race:—"Then came the Middle Park Stakes, and the inspection of the competitors in the paddock. The first I came across was The Virginian, a brown Swynford colt, who is very backward and rather lacking in quality. Ihe strongly-made El Cacique (Tracery —Indiecita) was much admired, and his trainer (J. Jarvis) had him in the pink of condition. His smallness is somewhat against him, yet ho is not so small as is generally imagined. His mode of cantering to the post was, however, anything but satisfactory, as he fought for his head at every stride, and appeared to be endeavouring to get rid of his jockey, Elliott. Picaroon (Beppo— Ciceronetta) is as yet by no means a perfect specimen of the British thoroughbred, being rather on the leg and undeveloped, but he is a rare mover, and displays much quality I liked the nice-sized Solario, better known, perhaps, as ttio Gainsborough—Sun Worship colt, though it is possible that he will be a difficult subject to train. Manna (Phalaris—Waffles) was turned out with the Beckhampton polish, and in perfect condition, but the fact romains that his lack of reach must always tell against him when opposed by more lengthy colts. Field Argent (Phalaris— bilver Wand) is a nice quality colt, not so good as he looks, but, on the other hand, Oojah (Bachelor's Double— Confoy), if a trifle lacking in class, is a game one and racing-like. He made the running, an d looked likely enough to eftoct a surprise, but weakened up the assent for homo, leaving Manna in command from Picaroon and Solario. J/icaroon seemed to get rather unbalanced on coming down Bushes Hill, cansing Bullock some anxiety, but once the nso had to be tackled ho put in sorno devouring strides', to quickly peg back Manna and win comfortably fjCm Solario^ with Manna close up third.
