The number of imported horses racing in the Dominion is steadily increasing. During the term just closing more English-bred horses have raced in New Zealand than in any previous season. The writer has compiled a list of the results of the doings of the imported horses this season. It will be noticed that there are only a few pounds between the-totals "of the two most successful performers at the head of the list, Panmure and First Glance, who met in a %yeight-for-age race at Dunedin; The.list<reads as follows: —

The Persian Knight—Aello youngster, one of Mr. Alison's Sydnev purchases, will race as Persian King. He has gone into J. Lambess's ElleTslie stable. Aello (dam of. the youngster named) was one of the Manawatu Stud Company's mares sent ito Sydney at the same time as Sir Laddo. Aello (Clanranald —Iris) is the dam of several winners in the Dominion, including Courtley and- Alecto (by Sir Laddo) and Bresies (by Achilles), who is a champion among the ponies at Sydney. Celaeno (Pilgrim's Progress— Aello) is one •of the Highderi stud matrons. She is the <lairi of Turpinite, a two-year-old colt by Field Battery. Persian' Knight is the sire of , Irish Knight, winner of the last Pertlj Cup. One of, the high-priced yearlings Isold at Randwick in the autumn of 1915 was a chestnut colt by Earlston: from the Bill of Portland mare Velox, who fel! to the bid of the Victorian sportsman ■who races undeT the nom de coui6e of "Mr. S. Rawdon," at 1100 gns. •The youngster. in question, -who is known by the name of Buckla-vy, is credited with standing right out as a typical Darby candidate, and when he recently Tomped home in front for the Gang Forward Stakes, under the steadier of 9.7,'at the Adelaide Racing Club's Meeting, his three-year-old pro^ spects were considerably brightened. Bnckiaw,' it jmay be remarked, claims a ..dash.of Musket blood on .the dam's side, which comes to him through his granddam, Tea Rose, who is a daughier of the Auckland-bred Martini Henry (a son of Musket and the Fisherman mare Sylvia). Bucklaw is , receiving his pre-. paration at the hands of Adam Skirvi ing, who served his apprenticeship with the late Edward Cufcts at Riccarton.

The late Mr: William Douglas won the Hawkes Bay Steeplecvhase .in t, 1879 with Baron. He was ridden by j. Munib, who still trains for \Mx. W. J. Douglas. The occasion mentioned was the only one on which the race went'to a To Mahunga-owned horse. 11l the old, days the Hawkes Bay Steeplechase Meeting was held on 9th November (Prince of Wales's Birthday). The programme at the meeting held in 1880 consisted of three events: Hawkes Bay Handicap Steeplechase, three miles; Maiden Steeplechase, two miles; and Napier Steeplechase Cup, two miles and a-half, Mr. W. Douglas's Venture (ridden by J. Munn) won the Hawkes Bay Steeple: chase, also the Napier Steeplechase. In the last-named event, for gentlemen riders, he was ridden by Mr. W. Broughton. J. H. Prosser was a gentle^ man 'rider in those days, and was on Eclipse, who acted as runner-up in both events. Venture \Vas one. of the best jumpers of those times. At Wanganui on 24th May he won the principal | event, distance about three miles, and later in the day pulled off the Grandstand Steeplechase, three miles, in which his only two opponents, Eclipse and Lohehand, failed to get round. Alt. Keitli (brother to: .W; H.) who was equally at home in the saddle on a trotter or galloper, put up a. good performance at Wanganuij then a oneday, meeting. He won the big event on Ventura, ■ finished third in the Hack Steeplechase on Bugler, won the Maiden Steeplechase on Uira, won the Grandstand Steeplechase on Ventura, and was second in the Consolation Steeplechase on Czar. In the old days a. steeplechase meeting was purely a cross-country gathering, not a flat race affair as at present. The Cobham Stud is to be dispersed on 28th July, According to the preliminary advertisement there is a reserve of -5000 guineas on Javelin (grandson of Carbine) one of the Cobham Stud stallions. Javelin's dam, full Cry, a. daughr ter of Flying Fox, was sold at the December sales, 1913, for 4600 guineas. Javelin is half-brother to Fortafix (by Bock Sand), winner of the Perth Two Thousand. Full Cry is also half-sister to Marcoval (Marco —Lady Villikina), who has one representative in the Dominion in Marcavis. At the Sydney Easter sales, Mr. J.
