SALA'ATION ARMY'S AVORK,

The Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) has received from Colonel Powley, chief secretary of tho Salvation Army, particulars of the Army's scheme of provision for children who, by reason of the war, are left otherwise unprovided for. Three new homes are being built:—(l) "The Grange," Ponsoiiby, Auckland, with accommodation for 40 girls; (2) a home at Russell, Bay of Islands, to accommodate 20 young' boys; (3) the residence of the late Col. Hayhurst, Temuka, to accommodate 40 to 50 boys. The Mayor has been advised in order that his committee may have the oppor-. tunit-y of making recommendations as to children to be received in the homes. The Army will receive the boys and girls of men who have fallen "at the front whose wives are unequal, from various causes, to the task of managing the children. In the case of widowers who are prevented from enlisting on account of their children, the Army- will also do its best to help. To help meet the cost of feeding, clothing, and educating the "war oi-phans" the Army proposes to make the following charges : For the children of fallen soldiers, the full amount allowed by the Pensions Board; for children of soldiers still at the front it is thought that it will be possible for the mothers to pay a minimum amount of Vs 6d a week; for the* children of widowers desiring to enlist, 7s 6d a week.
