At the Newmarket Meeting race for the Derby Stakes, of 6500 soys, by subscription of 50 soys each, colte 9.0, fillies and geldings 8.11, one mile and a-half, resulted as follows :—: — Mr. Sol Joel's b c Pommern, by Polymeluß— Merry Agnes (S. Donoghue) 1 Col, Hall Walker'B b c Let Fly, by White Eagle—Gondolette (E. Huxley) 2*, Major Roberta's blk c llossendale, by St. Frusquin— Menda (J. Clark) 3 [The Derby was set down for decision for 2nd June, the second day of the Epsom Summer Meeting, but on account of the war was postponed for a fortnight. The Derby winner, Pommern, scored an easy victory in tho Two Thousand Guineas, run at Newmarket on 28th Apiil. Tournament and The Vifcier were placed in the Two Thousand, in which His Majesty's Friar Marcus, Let Fly, and llossendale finished among the unplaced division. After his success in the Two Thousand Pommern became favourite for the Derby, for which he was specially prepared. Although Mr. J. B. Joel has been very buccessful in classic ra-cee, the wins of Pommern were the first ii^. Mr. S. B. Joel's colours. Mr. S. B. Joel owns a two-year-old full sister to the Derby winner, also a yearling 'filfy" by Sunder out of his dam. Merry Agnes. Pommern was bred by his owner and is trained by C. Peck. He won two races out of four starts an a two-year-old.]
