By the arrival of the p.s. Sturt, Captain Fairchild, we are in possession of news from the Front of a lamentable character. Yesterday (Monday) our force left Wai'ai at i a.m., and at 2 p.m. encountered the enemy again at Te-ngutu-o-te-maru, but this time they were thoroughly prepared to give us a warm reception; not only were the rifle pits but the tops of the trees manned, and deadly vollies poured in upon our men, who bravely pushed forward, cheered on by their officers, and returned the fire Avitk murderous effect. Twenty-seven Maoris bit the ground. How many of them sire Avouuded cannot say. Retired in good order, and are preparing for another attack. Most of our officers and men were killed by Hau Haus pexdied in the tops of trees.
