T3y the arrival of the Star of the South from Napier, we have Hawke's Bay papers to the 7th instant. From the Times of that date we take the following :— EARTHQUAKES IN CANTERBURY. Our own correspondent telegraphs as follows :—: —
June 6, 1C.20 a.m. Severe earthquake shock at Christchurch at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. Numerous chimneys knocked down. All stone and brick buildings in the town more or less damaged. St. John's Church was split. There was another shock at 7 o'clock last evening. j
June 5, 3.36 p.m. Severe earthquake at Christchurch at 8 o'clock this morning. Many brick and stone chimneys thrown down. Many houses shaken and damaged. The shock caused great alarm amongst the inhabitants. Influence did not extend further south than Bank's Peninsula. Duration, three seconds. Another correspondent has sent us the following:—
