MEETING OF THE RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the committee of the Ratepayers' Association was held last evening,, in the Army and Navy Hotel. Mr. Hobbs occupied the cbxir. There was a full attendance of members of committee, and •everal other gentlemen were present. Messrs. Jackson, Coupland, Messenger, and Hayles were added to the committee. Mr. Cabman made a report as to what had been done since last meeting. Mr. Wriglcy had been waited on, and that gentleman stated very fairly that he thought the market ought to be attempted at the place where some of the other members of the Board thought it ought to be. Mr. Wrigley, however, thought the draiuage of the market reserve Bhoiild be at once begun, and disapproved of ibe expenditure of the public money without cousulting the Board. Mr. JL>. 6 ahum was engaged at the Court, and they could not see him. lie (Mr. Cadman) thought that those who had spoken at the City Board to day in favour of what had been done at the Court-house had begged the question, had made the matter one of recrimination and counter charges. If they were so anxious as they laid they were to utilise the site, why did not they vote fur the removal of their offices there, which wou;d at once have saved £200 a-year? If they could not get tiie Board to agree to what they proposed, he thought they should make an appeal to the Superintendent to interfere, and get something done for the drainage of the reserve — to stop the ravages of typhus. He (Mr. Cadman) was certain that they would have with them ninetenths of the citizens of Auckland. Mr. Cadman then read extracts from the proceedings of the City Board, to show that they bad several timeß resolved to get the reserve drained. Mr. Ashton addressed the meeting. Mr. Cadmin moved, and Mr. Coupland seconded, " That it is the opinion of this committee that, with the view of improving the sanitary state of the city, tbe drainage and filling in of the market reserve should be immediately proceeded with. That this motion be transmitted to the City Board." — Carried unanimously. After some further discussion, it was agreed that a special meeting of the committee be held on Thursday evening, at which all the members of the Board should be invited to attend. The meeting then separated.
