CAMP, TE AWAMUTU (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) March 17.

In a former despatch I briefly referred to the prey*-' lence of typhoid fever in this camp, which I fear is assuming a more malignant shape, comparing .the casualties with the number treated. Hitherto the disease has only developed itself amongst the men of the 65th Regiment and Commissariat Transport Corps, whoso" camps aie situated in close proximity to the southern banks of the river, Steps are being taken to effect a change in position, which, it is hoped, will arrest the further spread of this alaraiug visitor. Tho Commissariat Transport Corps are already removed and placed under canvas (until other arrangements are peifected),»and it is intended to transfer the large range of stables (adjacent to the old quaiters) belonging to that force to the opposite side of the river. It is proposed that tho uninhabited house (over which a small guard has been placed), formerly the residence of the Rev. Mr. Morgan, be at once prepared for the reception of patients suffering from typhoid fever. lam given lo understand that it is also in contemplation to remove the Gffth under canvas. These and a variety of meani nre about to be adopted with a view to counteract the direful results which may be anticipated if not energetically and speedily acted upon. It is my painful duty (aud i regret it exceedingly) to announce to your leaders the death of Lieutenant Lewis, adjutant 65th Kegiment, which melancholy event took place soon after noon yesterday, from typhoid fever, after a brief illness. This gentleman was very popular amongst hi* bi other officers, by whom he was beloved, and held in the highest esteem by the men of the Gsth, who regarded him in his official capacity as a just and impartial mediator between them and the colonel commanding, who is also by this calamity deprived of an efficient aid in the conduct of iuterior regimeutal affairs. In his domestic spheie, I am told that Lieutenant Lewis was an affectionate husband and a loving father, which will tend to render the grief canted by his death to be of a moie poignant character to a sorrowing widow and two childien whom he has left to deplore and lament his death. There aie about thiiteen cases of this fever now under treatment in tho Gsth hospital. I am not iuformed as to the exact number in the general or iield hospital, which, of conrse, will consist of men of the Transport service. A gloom of almost universal stamp seems to overspread the camp, which wo hope may be speedily dispelled. Jj'rom the circumstance of several cases ocoufring at Ne^ycastle, and two at Whatawhata, it would almost incline us to imagine that this tinwelcome visitation was of an epidemic character. Captain Fitzsimons has been granted a month's leave of absence, and proceeded yesterday to Te Eori en loute for Auckland. The officers of the garrison have received instructions to have their regimentals in readiness for wear ; the date of commencing to do so will be shortly notified. I have no native intelligence to forward ; everything assumes a perfectly peaceable aspect, both here aud throughout the entire district, as notified to me by several friendly and private correspondents of my my own. A gieat sensation was oaused here, and all parties weio greatly shocked to hear of the dreadful slaughter of the Rev. Mr. Volkner. Gi eat anxiety is felt as to the fate of Mr. Grace and the other captives, whoso recovery from their awful position it is hoped will be soon achieved.
