Representative Assembly.

Our numerous and diversified elections, j which have been extended over so many anxious months, are at length, and happily, drawing towards a close. On Wednesday last, the nomination of candidates for seats in the Representative Assembly, for the City, Suburbs, and Northern Division of the_ Province of Auckland, took place at the Hustings in Shortland&treet, at noon. There are three members appointed by the Act to represent the City ; and for these three seats there were five candidates, who were proposed and seconded by the following gentlemen, and in the following order : — Messrs. John Makepeace, proposed by Mr. Kelly, seconded by Mr. Patterson Hartley, proposed by Dr. Campbell, and seconded by Mr. Thos.- C. Williams. O'Neill, by Mr. J. Macdougall, and seconded by Mr. Campbell. Daldy", proposed by Mr. Bain, and seconded by Mr. Macky. OBrien, proposed by Mr Dignan, and seconded by Mr. C. Lowson. The addresses of all parties were terse and brief, and were listened to with the utmost good humour. A show of hands having been called for, the Returning Officer declared it to have been in favour of Messrs. O'Neill, OBrien, and Makepeace. A poll was immediately demanded by Messrs. Bartley and JDaldy. After a brief interval, the Eeturning Officer proceeded with the nomination of candidates for the Suburba; these were Messrs. F. W. Merriman, proposed by Major Matson, and seconded by Mr. Jas. Robertson ; and W. F. Porter, proposed by Mr. Gilfillan, and seconded by Mr. H. Nicoll. There being no opposition to these gentlemen, they were forthwith declared to be the duly elected members. The Suburban members having expressed their acknowledgments to the Constituency, the nomination of two members for the Northern Dirision speedily followed. For these there were three candidates, viz. : — Messrs. Allan O'Neill, proposed by Mr. Lexon, and seconded by Mr. Heath. T. S. Forsaith proposed by Mr. Bycroft, and seconded by Mr. Hayr. Dr. Lee proposed by Mr. Lowe, and seconded by Dr. Macguaran. The candidates having severally addressed the electors, a show of hands was called for, and declared to have been in favour of Messrs. O'Neill and Lee. A poll was dein.inded by Mr. Forsaith, and will be taken at the Police Office on Tuesday, the 23rd inst. Yesterday, the polling for the City took place, and was carried on in nearly the same progressive ratio from its commencement to its close. About half-past four o'clock, the following official declaration was issued from the Hustings; and in conformity thereto the three first named gentlemen were declared to be duly elected as Members of the Representative Assembly for the City of Auckland :— * OBrien 415 O'Neill 391 Bartley 269 Makepeace 257 Daldy 142 The successful and unsuccessful candidates having severally returned thanks for the support they had received; and the courtesy and impartiality of the Returning Officer having been duly acknowledged, the proceedings of the day terminated.
