The Danzig correspondent of the "News Chronicle" says the triumph of the Nazis in the Danzig election enables them to form a government immediately, with the alliance of a smaller group. The Danzig correspondent of "The Times"; says: "The Nazis have captured nearly all the votes of the small farmers and agricultural workers, and also of large numbers of harbour labourers, who were previously socialists or communists. It is regrettable that the President (Dr. Ernst Ziehm), who has proved his capabilities both at Danzig and at Geneva, must relinquish his post, as the delicate negotiations with Poland cannot be treated lightly or threateningly. The commercial existence of Danzig depends on the maintenance of peaceful relations with Poland. The Nazis are certain to insist on a change in the Polish Corridor." LACK OF DISTURBANCE. NAZIS SECURE 35 SEATS IN HOUSE OF 72. DANZIG, May 28. The Volkstag election was completed without disturbance, which is attributed to the Nazis' conviction that they would receive 70 per cent, of the votes. There was much satisfaction when the authorities refused to permit voting by thousands of Danzigers, who travelled from Germany in motor-coaches and on free*"railway tickets, because they were non-residents, thereby defeating the German plan to secure an overwhelming majority. The Nazis captured 35 out of 72 j seats, polling almost 50 per cent, of the votes, of which they secured 107,619. Social Democrats polled 38,000, Centre Party 31,500, Communists 14,800, German Nationalists 13,600, Poles 6700, others 2600. The Nazis are no longer allowed to march singing in the streets, in close formation, but the ban is evaded by men marching in single file, whistling instead of singing. Prince August Wilhelm, displaying the Swastika, is conducting an active campaign on behalf of the Nazis.
