DEATH OF MRS EVANS.

SAD HOME-COMING OF ANTARCTIC HERO.

(.ROM 0.8 OWN CORRBSTrOKDKNT.) LONDON, April 25. Comnxandor Evans, of the Antarctic Expedition, with bis brother; Mr George Evans, who had travelled to Port Said to meet him, and Pettyofficer J. Mather, arrived home early this week. By the express wish of Commander Evans, the timo of his arrival was kept a secret, except to his closest friends. Lady Scott waited at the station for more than an hour to greet him. Among others present were Lieutenant Campbell, Mr F. R. H. Drake, Mr Cecil H. Mcares, and Mr W. M. Bruce, members of the party who had returned previously; also Dr. Frank Evans and Mis Evans.

Tho home-coming was quite p-ivato' nnd informal. Lady Scott, with true womanly sympathy, mado a special journey to Charing Cross in order to greet Commander Evans, nnd to offer to him in his hour of sorrow a word of comfort and a welcome. Tho meeting between j the widow and. tho widower was a tou_hin<-r scene. Tito illness which robbed Commander Evans of his wife was tragically brief. Mrs Evans was first taken ill on April 14th, and was attended by tho Otrnnto's doctor nnd a . lady' specialist who was travelling on tho liner. On tbo 15th a severe operation was performed. When Naples was reached on Thursday Mrs Evans was conscious, but at hnl_past two on Friday morning sho becamo worse, and sank gradually, death occurring about rmdnifiht on the 18th. The funeral took placo at Tou'on. the officers of the Olranto acting as bearers, nnd the mourners included Miss Ada .Stringer (Christchurch), mint of Mrs Evans, who* had been in Cairo for a month with her sister, Mrs Scott Cairns.

During tho voyage to England Commander Evans devoted his time to completing the records of tho expedition, and he will finish that work at his hotel in London.

Ciptain Scott's diaries are to be published in oxtenso. and they will not be ready until October. Tlio MS. is now "J the hands of the printers, and will nil two volumes, which will be uniform with Captain Sco'.t's previous book, "Tlio Voyage of the Discovery," published a. two minoa.v Simulteneor.slv with tho English edition will appear translations in Franco and Germany.
