ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The usual monthly meeting of the council of the a&ove society was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs Peacock, Fcrcday, Bird, Farr (hon sec), J. J. Oakden, L, Harper, C. C. Bowen, and J. P. Jameson. In the absence of Mr Blakiston, Mr Peacock took the chair. The curator's report was read. He reported the receipts for the month had been £74 15s 9d. The salmon ova were all hatched, and the fish had commenced to feed. The number was forty-five, two having died shortly after hatching. There were etill three deformed fish, not likely to live. From the appearance of the ova there ia little doubt that could they have been landed a few days sooner a much larger number of fish would have been hatched. The very hot weather had also a very prejudicial effect, eggs that showed unmistakable signs of vitality so long as the temperature was kept down to 60deg, rapidly died off at 55deg, the natural temperature of the spring. A species of fungus attacking the living eggs also occasioned some loss. There were, however, plenty of fish to render the experiment ultimately successful should after management prove fortunate. As the trout are now about spawning it would be neccßsary for that part of the gardens to be closed from the public ; the Curator asked for the necessary authority. It was decided that a sum ranging from £50 to £70 should be appropriated for the purpose of defraying the expenses of a person to visit Tasmania for the purpose of bringing over the salmon trout ova. It was decided to give the Curator authority to fence off a portion of the gardens during the spawning of the trout. After the transaction of some further business the Council adjourned.
