SAD DROWNING ACCIDENT.

We regret to learn of the death of Mr Hingston, of Te Puke, by drowning; while bathing in the Waihi Creek, near Maketu, on Easter Monday. The deceased gentleman and his family had gone picnicking to the Wailii, which is a favourite resort of the Te Pukeites for that" purpose. Mr Hlngston and his son went into the creek to bathe. He swam to %!e opposite bank, and wast returning whe^n suddenly he sank, Hig son rail ; otf "to give the alarm to the ladies, not noticing a Maori close at hand, who might have given assistance. About 3. 3Q p.m., Mr A. Warbrick, manager at Matata of Mr Sympnds' sulphur works there, (who was on his wav from Matata to Mr Symonds here to talk over the proposed purchase of a new sulphur deposit) arrived at Waihl He, on being applied to by Mr Hmgston's family, searched for the body, accompanied by a Maori m a canoe. Mr Warbrick saw the body at the bottom near the bar, He dived, and dislodged it, and suoceeded in getting a rope about it and getting it into the canoe: The body was brought ashore, and Mr Benner, Postmaster, Maketu, did his best torestore animation by meains of an etectrib battery, but without avail. Mr Hibgston and family arrived here in the Lady Jocelyn as one of Mr Stewart's special settlers. The sad occiirrence has cast a gloom over the^ district^ and niucn sympathy is expressed for the family.
