Bruce Election.

NO LICENESE LOST BY 21 2 sth VOTES Reduction Loit by 98* Yotet.

On Wednesday, in MHtoo, the blowing „ of the Bruce Woollen Company's whistle two minutes to 9 o'clock, heralded to the inhabitants that the polls were about to be opened. From that hour onwards till 3 o'clock there was a steady stream of electors flowing into the Tokomairiro polling-booth. Then for an hour or so, for some unknown reason, the stream was checked, and but -a rivulet of eleotors meandered into the booths. Later the number of voters broadened out again into a steady stream, till six o'clock, when Ibe polls dosed, On entering the booth the political wantß, and license and no license blends of the liquor question, were attended to by a small sitting army of officials -mostly scrutineers. From behind the kopjes of tablea and ballotboxes, these officials fired quite an emharassing battery of scrutinising eyes on each voter, as he or she marched up to the tables, and timidly asked for a voting paper. In fact the numbei of officials present was more than sufficient to have embarrassed the boldest person— even ope who was filled with a desire to impersonate, or break the law. Nor was tins all, for as goon as a voter appeared at a voting table then he or she was commanded by the stern voioe of a deputy to stand and reply to a quick fire of verbal shot and shell, as to hb or her right to vote at all. The various arrangements to carry out the polls reflected the greatest credit on the Returning Officer (Mr Gilbert Scott), and he, his deputies and his poll clerks are to be congratulated on the orderly and businesslike manner in which 'the booth was managed. .^ «■»■■■■■■■■! political and liquor situation*. The general verdiot regarding the former, we* that Mr Allen would be returned by anything up to 700 votes, and that Mr If aeon would poll very heavily at Kaitangata. The results showed that Mr Maeon managed to do much better than was expee. ted. In fact, when the results started to , come in, from outside Milton— for instance from Fairfax, Waihola, and Kaitangata, showing Mr Mason going ahead by leaps and bounde f and Stirling erroneously giving him 100 more than Mr Allen—the latters supporters began to look and feel m if hope had fle«J, «n<l Bruce ha& iaroeel its back upon its old political favorite But the correction of Stirling returns to equal voting for both candidate!, and the great majority at the Tokomairiro booth, turned the tables, and the Allenites knew that the battle was fought and won by their man. As the night wore on every return added to his total, and as will be seen, Mr Allen won the seat with a majority of 439 votes. -The victory was a splendid one for Mr Allen, and his big majority to some extent was due to his pleasing personality. Mr &fiuoa made » same uphill fight, and was zealously supported Oy Me Hollows «n« the Miners' Union at Kaitangata, who worked splendidly for him. The general opinion, regarding the carrying of No-license was very mixed, many people were confident that it would be carried by a large majority. Others however, who had watched events, knew that lately there had been a slump in No-License, and that the result would be a toss up one side or the other.
