On Wednesday, in MHtoo, the blowing „ of the Bruce Woollen Company's whistle two minutes to 9 o'clock, heralded to the inhabitants that the polls were about to be opened. From that hour onwards till 3 o'clock there was a steady stream of electors flowing into the Tokomairiro polling-booth. Then for an hour or so, for some unknown reason, the stream was checked, and but -a rivulet of eleotors meandered into the booths. Later the number of voters broadened out again into a steady stream, till six o'clock, when Ibe polls dosed, On entering the booth the political wantß, and license and no license blends of the liquor question, were attended to by a small sitting army of officials -mostly scrutineers. From behind the kopjes of tablea and ballotboxes, these officials fired quite an emharassing battery of scrutinising eyes on each voter, as he or she marched up to the tables, and timidly asked for a voting paper. In fact the numbei of officials present was more than sufficient to have embarrassed the boldest person— even ope who was filled with a desire to impersonate, or break the law. Nor was tins all, for as goon as a voter appeared at a voting table then he or she was commanded by the stern voioe of a deputy to stand and reply to a quick fire of verbal shot and shell, as to hb or her right to vote at all. The various arrangements to carry out the polls reflected the greatest credit on the Returning Officer (Mr Gilbert Scott), and he, his deputies and his poll clerks are to be congratulated on the orderly and businesslike manner in which 'the booth was managed. .^ «■»■■■■■■■■!
