THE NEW MEMBERS

PARLIAMENTARY CHANGES

There will be a number of new faces on either side of the House in the next Parliament. The following are brief biographies of the new M.P.'s:— REV. E. I". AUERJIAS Chaplain-Captain E. P. Aderman (National), who defeated the Labour member for New Plymouth, is a Church of Christ pastor. He was born in Australia and served in the last war. He was minister of the Church of Christ in Dunedin, where he was regarded as a man of the highest humanitarian ideals. He is now serving in the Army as a chaplain. MR. R. M. ALGIE Mr. R. M. Algie, the new National member for RQinuera, in succession to Mr. W. P. Endean, who held the seat for the party, is widely known as a professor of law, lecturer and writer. Mr. Algie has the qualities required for Parliamentary life. A very able platform man, he has spoken in inost parts of the Dominion, and is certainly no stranger to political controversy. He is a graduate of Auckland University, and has lived in Auckland for many years. MR. A. E. ARMSTRONG Mr. A. E. Armstrong (Labour), who has defeated the Speaker of the last Parliament, Mr. W. E. Barnard, is a son of the late Hon. H. T. Armstrong, who held numerous portfolios in the Labour Government. Mr. Armstrong was born in Waihi in 1902 and was educated in Christchurch. For six years he served on the Christ church City Council. He has been stationed at Napier for the past four years as liaison officer of the National "Service Department. MR. T. R. BEATTY Mr. T. R. Beatty, the successful Nationalist contestant for the Oamaru seat, held in the last Parliament by the Minister of Health, Mr. Nordmeyer, was born in North Otago and worked for some years as a shepherd and farmhand. He then entered the building trade, and some 12 years ago, starting in a small way, established his own business as a contractor. He was responsible for a very successful building scheme in Oamaru for small wage-earners, who were thus enabled to own their own homes. As a member ot' the National Military Reserve he was mobilised for full-time service, and was in the Army for many months. MR. C. M. BOWBES Mr C. M. Bowden (National), who succeeds Mrs. C. C. S. Stewart (Labour) as member for Wellington West is a Wellington City Councillor, a public accountant and a member of the Bureau of Industries, as representative of New Zealand manufacturers. He is a past president of the 'Wellington Competitions Society N.Z. Society of Accountants, and I Associated Chambers of Commerce.

MEUT.-COM. P. G. COXNOMjY Lieutenant-Commander P. G. Connolly. DSC R N.Z.N.V.R.. who retained the Dunedin West sent for Labour in succession to Dr. D. G. McMillan, was a member of the Dunedin City Council. He has been on active service in the Navy since the early part of the war. He was the first commander of the minesweeper Moa after she was purchased by the New Zealand Government, and brought the ship to New Zealand. MR. B. B. CORBETT Mr. E. B. Corbett (National), who replaces the retiring Independent member, Mr. C. A- Wilkinson, was born at Okato 45 years ago. Mr. Corbett enlisted in the N.Z.E.F. at the age of 19, and, after the last war, took up a soldier's farm. He has been a director of the Oxford Dairy Company for many years and has been an active worker on public bodies in the ICgmont electorate. MR. B. COULTER Mr. R. Coulter, who retains for Labour the Raglan seat, formerly held by Mr. Lee-Martin, a former Minister of Agriculture, is Mayor of Te Aroha. He was born in Christchureh in IS9I. He settled in Te Aroha in 1904 ami has been a member of the Te Aroha Borough Council for more than 20 years, and many years Mayor. He has been associated for a number of years with the Northern Athletic Union," the Thames Harbour Board and the Te Aroha Fire Board. He was Labour M.P. for Waikato from 103.J to 1938. He stood for Hauraki in 1938 and was defeated by the late LieutenantColonel J. M. Allen. MR. R. G. GERARD Mr. R. G. Gerard, the new member for Mid-Canterbury, succeeds Mrs. W. J. Poison, "who did not seek re-election as the holder of the seat in the National interests. Mr. Gerard is 39 years of age and was educated at Christ's College. He is a farmer at Mt. Hutt. In the present war he was unable to pass the medical test, but his four brothers have been on active service, one of them being the Bishop of Waiapu, Rev. G. V. Gerard, senior chaplain to the N.Z.E.F. Mr. Gerard is a member of the Dominion executive of the Farmers' Union, and has taken an active part in local affairs.

MR. F. VISVLAX Mr. F.Findlay (National) wlo defeated the sitting Labour member for Hamilton, Mr. C. A. Ban-ell, is a master baker in Hamilton and is chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board. He topped the poll at the borough council elections in 1041 and is now deputy-Mayor. MR. W. H. GILIiESPIE Mr. W. H. Gillespie holds the Hurunui seat as a National representative in succession to Mr. G. W. Forbes, a former Prime Minister, who did not seek re-elec-tion. Mr. Gillespie is a residents of Bennets, North Canterbury, and a member of the Oxford County Council. He served In the last war, and in the present war has taken an active part in Home Guard work. MR. P. HACKKTT Mr. F. Hackett, whose victory as a Labour representative for Grey Lynn over Mr. J. A. Lee, leader of the Democratic Labour party, is one of the outstanding features of the election, is chairman of the Auckland Rehabilitation Committee and secretary of the Tramway Employees' Union. He is 41 years of age and is a native of England. After serving in the Merchant Navy in the last war, he came to New Zealand in 1921. He joined the .staff of the Auckland Transport Board in the following year. Mr. Hackett has been identified with the industrial movement of the Labour party ever since. MR. K. J. HOLYOAKE Mr. K. J. Holyoake lias retained the Pahiatua seat for National in succession to the late Sir Alfred Ransom. Mr. Holyoake, who is 39 years of age, was elected as representative for Motueka in 1932 and was then the youngest member of the House. He was defeated in 193S by Major C. F. Skinner. MR. G. H. MACKT.EY Mr. G. H. Mackley (National) is the new member for Masterton, having defeated Mr. J. Robertson (Labour). Mr. Mackley was former general manager of the New Zealand Railways. He started in the railway service as a cadet in 1000 and retired in 1939, after graduating through all branches on the trafficoperating side, serving as station clerk, stationmaster, transport and train-run-ning officer. Mr. H. T. Morton (National), who defeated Mrs. M. M. Dreaver (Labour) for the Waitemata seat, is Mayor of Te Kuiti, where he has practised as a barrister and solicitor. He was educated at King's College, Auckland, and Cambridge University, England. He served four years with the N.Z.E.F. in the last war, and was wounded on the Somme in 1916. He is 35 years of age. and has taken a keen interest in aeronautics, being the owner of his own plane, which he has flown to various 'parts of New Zealand. MR. A. J. MURDOCH Mr. A. J. Murdoch, who. as National member, succeeds to the Marsden seat, held for tile Labour party by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Barclay, is a previous member of Parliament and exMinister of Agriculture. He is widely known throughout New Zealand. A practical farmer, he has for many years represented the farmers on various bodies. MR. J. T. WATTS Mr. J. T. Watts is the new National member for the Riccarton seat. He succeeds Mr. H. S. Kyle, who formerly represented the party until recently, when he announced his intention of contesting the seat as an Independent. Mr. Watts is a lawyer in Christchurch, unci is a young married man with several children. He was recently released from the Army. MR. S. W. SMITH Mr. S. W. Smith (National), who succeeds Mr. C. W. Boswell (Labour) as member for the Bay of Islands, is 50 years of age. He is chairman of the Bay of Islands Dairy Company, a member of the executive of the Northland Dairy Association, and a member of the Bay of Islands County Council and the Bay of Islands Hospital Board. Born at Ashburton in 1893, he served in the Great War, being invalided home in December, 1918. He was in business for a time, but since 1930 has been farming at Pakaraka. MR. T. C. WEBB Mr. T. Clifton Webb (Independent Nationalist) succeeds the late Mr. J. G. Coates as representative for Kaipara. Mr. Webb is of the third generation of a family of Northern Wairoa farmers. He was born in Te Kopuru and entered the Auckland Grammar School with a junior district scholarship. He took up the study of law and qualified in 1910, entering practice three years later after gaining experience in an Auckland law office. On returning from military service in 1919 he resumed his practice at and took up residence in Auckland 16 years a<*o In his youth Mr. Webb was a provincial Rugby representative, and has continued his close association with the game both as a referee and an executive official He is a former president of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union, ami is vice-president of the Auckland Rugby Union. He served for a term on the Dargaville Borough Council, and was also a member of the Kaipara Chamber of Commerce. MR. M. H. ORAM Mr. M. H. Oram is the new National candidate for Manaw'Uu, succeeding Mr. J. G. Cobbe, who formerly held the seat for the party and did not seek re-election. Mr Oram was educated at Wellington College and Victoria University College. He is a barrister and solicitor in Palmerston North, and owns a farm in the Manawatu electorate. He is chairman of the Palmerston North High School Board of Governors, and a member of the Victoria College Council and the Massey College Board of Governors. MR. W. A. SHEAT Mr. W. A. Sheat, tho new member for Patea, retains the National party's interest in the seat, the former representative being Mr. H. G. Dickie, who did not seek re-election. Mr. Sheat was born at Pihama in 1599. He was educated at Hawera High School and Victoria University College. He at one time was a lecturer in economics for the W.E.A., but since 192S has been farming at Pihama. He has held numerous public positions, and has been a prominent member of the New Zealand Farmers' Union. In 1921 he ■won the Union Prize for the best debater at Victoria University College.

MR. G. F. STM Mr. G. F. Sim (Xational) has defeated Mr. A. F. Moncur (Labour) as representative of the Rotorua seat. Prior to the war Mr. Sim was agent for a stock firm at Waiuku, where he was a member of the Waiuku High School board. He is 32. He was educated at King's College and represented South Auckland at Rugby. He enlisted at the start of the war, and has lost his right arm and left eye on active service.
