MYSTERIOUS CALM ON DANZIG SITUATION.

ITALY URGES PEACE.

Poles Sa> Next Three Weeks

Will Be Critical.

2,000,000 NAZIS UNDER ARMS.

United Press Association.—Copyright.

(Received 1 p.m.)

LOXDOX, August 15.

Though in Berlin the Danzig situation seems suddenly becalmed, and even Press comment has died down and while Italian newspapers continue to urge a peaceful solution, it is felt in Warsaw that the next three weeks will be critical.

The uncertainty apparent in Berlin is partly due to the absence of the leaders with whom the power of decision rests, though Dr. Goebbels unexpectedly returned by air from Italy.

Meanwhile, according to "The Times" Berlin correspondent, it is realised that Count Ciano's and Dr. Burckhardt's visits to Herr Hitler are far more important than is yet admitted.

A Berlin message says that after the conclusion of regimental manoeuvres this week, manoeuvres 011 a divisional scale will begin, involving 1,800,000 men, and reaching a climax in September with 2,000,000.

Already defences have been erected along the entire length of the Polish frontier.

RUMANIA READY.

iS-esent Frontiers, Says Carol,

Are Unalterable.

RISK OF WORLD iftSASTER. (Received 1.30 p.m.) BUCHAREST, August 15. Half a million troops will participate in the forthcoming manoeuvres. King Carol, after a review marking the Crown Prince's entry into the Navy as a lieutenant, declared that the Rumanian frontiers as now marked out were unalterable except at the risk of a world-wide disaster. The determination to defend them must be the steelclad faith in the soul of every Rumanian.

FIRED ON REFUGEES.

CHARGES AGAINST POLES

(Received 1.30 p.m.) PRAGUE, August 15. Bratislava newspapers allege that Polish frontier guards fired on a party of 150 German Ukrainian Slovak refugees, wounding 25 while on Slovak territory after crossing the Polish frontier.
