Poland Sends Stern Ultimatum
To Danzig Senate.

LONDON", August C. T , hf L . Pol ' sh newspapers announce that Poland is prepared to negotiate on the Danzig Customs dispute, savs a dispatch from Warsaw.
A grave crisis was averted as the result of Danzig's assurance that Polish and Customs officials would not be prevented from carrying out their duties. Ihe Senate sent a letter to 83 of the 110 officials, ordering them to give up their johs and leave Danzig before Sunda v.
Poland thereupon sent a stern ultimatum. complaining of a flagrant violation of the Polo-Danzig agreement, and gave the Senate until last evening to cancel the orders. This was the first actual ultimatum from Poland since the Danzig question became acute.
A Senate official advised Warsaw by telephone of the cancellation of the orders a few hours before the expiry of the time limit.
The situation is still grave. Poland sent a further Note to Danzig hoping the Nazis would study the position with a view to reaching a positive understanding. A detailed reply is expected from the Senate to-morrow.
r I he Polish spokesman announced that Danzig's move to destroy Poland's ( ustoms rights was most serious. If Danzig attempted a Customs union with fiermany, it would be regarded as a cause for war.
