MEETINGS OF SETTLERS. MR. HERBITT'I ADDRESSES. In Ideal conditions, Mr. Harry Merritt, National candidate for Auckland East, furthered his election campaign by a visit to YVaiheke island duriug the weekend. At Lowe# Bay, Rocky Bay and Osteiid he attended small meetings of settlers and local residents, and chatted freely with them, answering many questions 011 the Social Security Act. In the evening Mr. Merritt addressed a larger meeting of some 70 people at the Oneroa Hall. 'Ihere was a constant .stream of good-natured interjections Irom a email section of the audience, but whatever feelings of antagonism there might have been were dispelled at the conclusion of the meeting by interjectors coming to the platform and shaking Mr. Merritt by tlie hand. The sincerity of Mr. Merritt's reply to i|UPrtioiK on unemployment, in which lie stated that, in his opinion, the unemployment question was one of such serious moment as to be placed above party issues, obviously won the syinpathy of hi* hearer*. After a week-end in the fresh air and the bright sunaliine, Mr. Merritt returned on Sunday night much refreshed to'carry on the campaign.
