GOVERNMENT OVERWHELMED

PEOPLE'S EMPHATIC MANDATE LABOUR 52, NATIONAL 20, INDEPENDENT 8 DEMOCRAT PARTY REJECTED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. * A REFORM'S GREAT LANDSLIDE OF 1928 ELECTIONS REPEATED. Greater even than the landslide against Reform in 1928 was Labours overwhelming victory at the poll yesterday. The people's mandate was emphatic. Slowly through the years the Lab our party has quietly but steadily gamed seats. Yesterday it had Z4; to-day it has 52. Labour's victory was as amazing as it was devastating. In 1928 New Zealand saw one of the greatest political landslides of her short history when after 1 6 years of rule Reform was rejected by the people with unprecedented emphasis. Now the tide of public feeling has turned so completely that Messrs Forbes and Coates find themselves with greatly reduced strength. Government members who won by half the course at the lyii poll, with hundreds of votes to the good, have been hopelessly beaten or have been returned with,slender majorities. The new party in power, led by Mr. M. J. Savage, polled amazingly well. In the course of its victory it swept aside three Ministers of the Crown, Sir Alexander Young (Hamilton), the Hon. C. E. Macmillan (Tauranga), and the Hon. J. Bitchener (Waitajri). The formation of the new Ministry will be undertaken immediately after the resignation of the Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes. His intention is to tender his resignation to the Governor-General as soon as the writs have been returned. With the resignation of Mr. Forbes Cabinet will, of course, automatically go out of office. It is believed that about a week or ten days will be occupied m the official count which must precede the returns of the writs. At the 1928 general election, when the Reform Government was defeated, Labour lost two seats, but on this occasion it more than doubled its strength without the loss of a seat. The Democrat party failed signally, not a single seat being secured. Its two sitting members, Messrs. A. J. Stallworthy (Eden) and W. A. Veitch (Wanganui) were beaten decisively. Its leader, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, Mayor of Wellington, ran ln a three at Masterton, where the Labour man, Mr. J. Robertson, was returned ahead of the sitting member, Mr. G. R. oykes. bight Independents, some of whom have been staunch supporters of Labour in the House, have won seats. Trem'endous interest was taken in the poll throughout the country. Returns to hand show that the total votes cast for all candidates was just under 800,000. The Government was overwhelmed by 130,000. Votes cast against the Government totalled 465,441, and for the Government 333,693. 1 Labour s brightest dreams were more than realised; Members of the party were confident of a majority, and were optimistic about the number of seats they would win, but even the mo3t ardent could not have believed that their majority would be as large as it turned out to be. Before the election the Leader of the Labour party, Mr. M. J. Savage, regarded 43 or 44 seats throughout the country as certainties, and he hoped that his followers would secure possibly 50. But the capture of 52 seats exceeded even his expectations. Interest naturally was concentrated throughout polling day on the fight of the leaders of the three parties which went to the poll—-rMr. Forbes, the Prime Minister, and with him Mr. Coates, Mr. SaVage and Mr, Hislop. Results which came to hand last night showing Mr. Savage's big majority were received with enthusiasm, and as the night wore on keen interest was taken in the fight by Mr. Coates to retain his Kaipara seat. He did it, but by only 198 votes. On the other hand, Mr. Forbes was in the happy position of never being seriously challenged for his seat, being returned with a majority of 1 1 54. A thrilling election day was croWned with the excellent speeches of the leaders of the victors and the leaders of the vanquished, which came over the air from Dargaville, Auckland and Wellington.
