MR. J. FLETCHER DEAD

EX-MEMBER CF PARLIAMENT. REPRESENTATIVE OF GREY LYNN. The death occurred this morning of Mr. John S. Fletchcr, former member of Parliament for Grey Lynn. Mr. Fletcher came into prominence in 1928 when he was returned as member for Grey Lynn. He contested the seat at the last election, but was defeated. Mr. Fletcher was born in Scotland, and received his secondary and college education by means of scholarships. At the age of 24 he was appointed headmaster of the technical and commercial classes conducted by the Kirkintilloch School Board. He was later secretary of the Scottish Class Teachers' Association and a member of the committee of the Scottish Educational Institute. He was a vice-president of the Y.M.C.A. in Glasgow.

Mr. Fletcher came to New Zealand in 1910 and joined his brothers in the Fletcher Construction Company. He travelled extensively in Great Britain, the United States, and Canada, studying the latest methods of construction. He was made a director of the firm, and later was manager in Dunedin, where he was a member of the executive of the Dunedin Manufacturers' Association. Mr. Fletcher was a very keen student of political and economic questions. In sport he was actively associated with Association football, cricket, and bowling. Mr. Fletcher was 45 yeare of age. He is survived by his wife.
