TRAINS COLLIDE.

BOTH ENGINES DAMAGED. ROTOBUA EXPRESS DELATED. LADY ALICE FERGUSSON A PASSENGER. A collision occurred at KgaruawaMa this morning between the Rotorua express and the Waipa Coal Company's train. Lady Alice Fergusson, wife of the Governor-General, was a passenger . by the express. Considerable damage was done to both engines and two of the carriages, but nobody was hurt. The damaged express was the one which left Auckland at 10.30 this morning for Rotorua. A relief engine was sent ■ out from Frankton to take the train to the junction, and after an hour's hold-up j the express proceeded. It is now running an hour late, but it is expected that ' the time will be made up before the \ train reaches Rotorua. i BOTH ENGINES DAMAGED. As the Rotorua express from Auckland was pulling out of Ngaruawahia < station to-day, the engine collided with 1 the engine of the Glen Massey train, which was standing at the Frankton end . of the station. . j The cab of the Glen Massey engine i I was driven against the end of the boiler and the engine derailed. The cause of the accident was insufficient I clearance. I The engine of the express had an axle bos broken, coverings stripped off various parts, and a cab window broken, i I The axle boxes were also stripped off J the tender. The fireman of the express I got his hands cut by broken glass. The engine of the Glen Massey train scraped along the carriages of the ex- j press until the engine was pulled up, and the train stopped when the engine was locked to a carriage by the pro- | jecting roof. I The passengers were considerably alarmed and crowded out of the carriages. The railway staff, under Mr. S. J. Webb, the stationmaster, at once got to work to shift the trucks of coal attached to the Glen Massey engine and Ito jack the latter back on the rails. The work will probably take only an hour or two. Luckily, the driver and fireman of the Glen Massey engine got clear in time. All the windows of the carriages behind the express engine were broken and the headings round the came ripped away. Several windows were also broken in other carriages, the headings torn off and the roofs broken at the edge. The express engine was too badly damaged to proceed under its own power. The engine was in charge of Driver Riddjcjc and Fireman Holmes. Though the fiflen Massey engine's cab was smashed and some of the engine controls destroyed, the main body of the engine was apparently undamaged.
