fny Telegraph.— Press Association.) WET,T J TN , OTON\ this day. Dr. Henry Pollen, port health officer at Wellington, and a member of the Military Pensions Honrd, died to-day of pleurisy following influenza, at the age of 60. WANGANTTL (By Telegraph.—Frees Association.) WANGANUI, this day. The influenza situation appears to be easier, and it is bdieved the corner hae been turned. A number of cases are etill coming in, but they are not of a eerious nature. AT HOKITTKA.

HOKITIKA, this day. Three influenza deaths were reported yesterday, including Sergeant-Major Thomas Atkins, who won the Distinguished Conduct Medal at Oallipoli, and since his return has been in charge of the Defence Office here, proving a most efficient officer. He leaves a widow and young child. DTJNEDIN. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star. , ") DUNEDIN, Friday. As rejjards the prevailing scourge modieal men report the greater number of eases in Otago are of a mild nature. There were 216 cases in the Dunodin Hospital at noon to-day, an increase of only two as compared with Thursday. Services will b< , held in the Anglican Churches in Dunedin diocese on Sunday forenoon, but they have been abandoned in all Presbyterian Churches throughout Otago. The tram service will be discontinued from one o'clock to-morrow afternoon till Thursday next. : PRICE OF FRUIT. I (To the Editor.) Sir, —As several refcrenctw have been made lately in the columns of the "Star" to fruitgrowers' charges for lemons ! and oranjres, I think it is only fair to the retail men that a little of the other eide ehould be known. I handle a small quantity of the same myself, and as late as yesterday was charged 3/6 per dozen by the wholesale houses, and yet by law I am compelled to sell Jat 3/ per dozen, whilo the wholesale I men are not affected.—l am, etc., Matamata, Nov. 19. J. McfNTYRE. [Reprint from "Herald," November 23.] THE EPIDEMIC. (To Uie Editor.) Sir, —Invariably when a disaster j occurs, there are innumerable sugges--1 tions to prevent a repetition, but in this instance, I think, the City Council is somewhat to blame owing to its insanitary slum areas, which to some extent, have aggravated the epidemic. The beautitication of the city's prominent places is admirable, but to have disgusting insanitary areas, very much resembles the recent slum disclosures of fur coats, white silk blouses and stockings, minus furniture and bedding, but an abundance of rags and filth. The Mayor this year stated that no sanitary curtailments would be allowed to impair the health of the city, and we know what eventuated with the removal of backyard refuse. Judging by the reports of epidemic workers the insanitary state of some areas must have been known to the city inspectors for years, and why they have remnined silent might yet be made public. The Mayor has wisely promised a public meeting for an expression of opinion, and if the Council and epidemic workers furnish the names of the owners of the "doss" houses, no doubt it will be instructive and interesting. I think no landlord, agent, or those interested in property for letting purposes, ought 'to be a member of the City Council, as it tends to impair the efficiency of inspection. There is a lot of talk about the "right of entry." I have been in Auckland for some years, and the inI epectors have inspected the sanitary ar- : rangements of my residence, but prob--1 ebly why they avoid the slum areas might be due to influence or longevity. P. VIRTUE.
