AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN. In referring to the number of children cared for in the nursery supported in Auckland by the Older of the Good Shepherd, the report presented at the annual meeting of this society this afternoon makes pointed reference to the attitude taken up by many of the parents. The report states: "We refuse to take as resident children many infants. The utter callousness shown by parents whose only desire is to be rid of their children is one of the ugliest features of present-day life. The number of parents vho seem 'without natural affection, and who do not want to give themselves the opportunity of loving their children, is appalling. They are chiefly New Zealandcrs. and are. products of the present system of education."

The report goes on to say that the decreasing interest and help given to the Benovolent Society was a matter for extreme regret. For years the Society had been giving financial aid. irrespective of church or creed. "If the operations are to become less and less effective," says the report, "aml the church people continue to be apathetic regarding their poor and distressed, what will the result be?"
