OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN COLBECK

The death is announced of Captain Wm. Henry Colbeck, who passed away last night at his residence, Gladstone Road, Parnell, at the age of 73. The deceased gentleman was an old and very well - kjiown colonist, and tho news of his death will be received with regret by many; Captain. Colbeck was born in Yorkshire, and prior to coming to New Zealand in. 1877 was engaged in the woollen manufacture. Coming out to New. Zealand, he settled in the North, where he remained for some seven years. He identified himself closely with the interests •of the North, and represented one of the Northern electorates in Parliament. Some 17 years ago he.came to Auckland permanently, and since then had been closely connected with the commercial life of the city. He was President of the Bank of New Zealand and of the Chamber of Commerce. At one time he purchased a block of land in the Kaipara and formed a settlement at Batley, on the Otamatea, with a view to placing on it immigrants from England. This enterprise was, however, never carried out Captain Colbeek was at one time President of the Auckland Club. As a business man he bore a very high reputation, and his death will be deeply regretted by all who knew him The deceased gentleman had been ailing for some months. He leaves a family of six sons and two daughters.
