A WOULD-BE SUICIDE.

U the Police Court to-day John Cullanan was charged with unlawfully having attempted to commit suicide" on the Bth inst. Accused, who is a remittance man in receipt ot £ioo a year, middle aged, walked in from Raglan, reaching here on Friday, and found his quarterly allowance awaiting him. This, in addition to a love affair at Raglan, set him drinking, and he commenced to behave, in an eccentric fashion. He walked into a stable yard on Friday evening where there, was a rope hanging from one of the beams, and endeavoured to tie it round his neck. He found it was not long enough, so he carried a box over, placed it in position, and crossing himself devoutly, proceeded to tie a "granny" knot. He had just got the first hitch made when the stable boy rushed at him and pulled him off the box. The knot gave way, and accused falling was rendered unconscious. He was committed to take his trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. Bail was refused. Accused, who expressed his intention of making a better job of it next time, has only been in the colony eight months.
