The English racing season of 1894 will] long be remembered, if only from the fact of the Derby having for the first time in its history of nearly 120 years, been won by bbc Prime Minister of </reat Britain. ' Ladas has accomplished for Lord Rosebery what Mainstone could nob do for Lord Palmerston, or Toxophilite for Lord Derby. Lord Ros-ebery well deserved tho popular victory which he gained, for he has been a staunch supporter of the turf for a quarter of s century. Ib seemed after Ludas had won the Two Thousand Guineas, the Newmarkeb Stakes, and the Derby, as if he was going to prove another Ormonde, and carry all before him, but the Epsom Downa marked a turning-point in his career, and bis three

The worth of a racehorse is nob to be estimated by the amount of money he may happen to win, for when two". really good animals meet, as in the. case'of Best Man and Avington, whose encounter at Sandown was among the mosb interesting events of the autumn, one of the two must succumb, arid yet the defeated horse msy be a long way the superior of some other which has, with a weak opposition, secured a race worth several thousand pounds. ~; . 1 While the racing of the year nas been of ab least average interest, the action of the English Jockey Club a ahorb time ago would seem to have cleared the air, for little has been beard of any racing scandals or of unfair riding, and it is to be hoped that the stewards will not relax their vigilance and will put down with a strong hand every malpractice which may be brought to lighb. Nineteen of thirty principal races of the season have been won by inmates of the Newmarket stables.

It follows as a matter of course that, with Isinglass securing the three £10,000 races, Mr M'Calmont should, at last season, head the list of winning owners, and while a twelvemonth ago he occupied this position with a total ot only £25,431, he has this year won nearly £3§,000 in 16 races, three of which were worth v £31,498. If to this sum are added the winnings of Isinglass as a three and as a two-year-old, ib will be found that he has taken 10-r.aceß (out of 11) worth close upon £55,000, which is just about the same amount that Donovan secured for the Duke of Portland in the course of two seasons.
