THE ENGLISH DERBY WINNER.

Lord Rosebery'e colb Ladas has set the seal upon his previously great reputation by winning the English Derby, being followed homo by Lord Alington's Match Box, who occupied the same position in the Two Thousand Guineas last month. The merits of the pair are thus confirmed to an ounce. Ib would cerbainly appear that Ladas is a colt of the " smasher " order for so far he has won each of bis two and three-year old engagements, viz Woodcote Stakes ab Epsom, Coventry Stakes at Ascot, Doncaster Champacne States, the Middle Park Plate, Two Thousand Guineas, Newmarket Stakes and Derby. With such a record it is only fair to predicb.thab the son of Hampton will bo enrolled in the select list of winners of the "triple crown." It is stated thab Lord Rosebery's win was immensely popular, and bhe assistance ot the police had to be called to restrain his friends rushing him. Lord Rosebery's connection with racing was formed at a very early period (says an English writer). In his first dealings with the turi he wob most decidedly a '■ plunger," and when veterans saw him bebting his hundreds, and looked ab his somewhat boyish and innocent appearance, and noticed his gentle manner, they predicted thab he would nob last lone ; the " ring " rushed at him open-mouthed, and seemed prepared to swallow him. After one or two onslaughts the gentlemen of tbe pencil began to have some respecb for the mild young nobleman, who so quietly booked his "* three monkeys " and " pulled ib off." " He's no flab, I can bell you," we can very well recollect bearing a bebbing man inform his partner, who thought that be had been doing a good stroke of business with his lordship. •Or Mango. Ladas is a direcb of Whalebot.o, who in 1810 won for the then Premier of England, the Duke of Grafton, the coveted Derby. Ladas was got by Hampton, whose sire was Lord Clifden, by Newminster, a son of Touchstone* who was by Camel, a son of Whalebone. of Ladas, Lord Clifcjen excepted. Whalebone, broke a blood vessel, alnd died in 1831, aged 24. He son Camel, the sire of Conrad, imported to Tasmania, was shob ab Stockwell in 1844,-aged 22, His grandson, the famous Touohstohe, died at Eaton in 1861, at the patriarchal age of 30, Touchstone's son Newminster died in 1868 at Rawcliffe, ab 20. His son Lord Clifden was only 15 when he died of hearb disease ab Wadhursb—a national lOss. Hampton, the sire of Ladas, is by Lord Clifden, and though he was foaled as far back as 1872, the old fellow is still full of vigor. : * j
