CABINET APPOINTMENTS

COLONEL FRASER TO BE SEKGEANT-AT-ARMS.

MR T. BRAUKEN APPOINTED BILL READER. THE BALLANCE MEMORIAL. (BY TKLEORAJH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Wellington, thia day. Cabinet met thia afternoon, and disposed of several matters of importance. It was decided to appoint Colonel Fraser, who represented Te Aroha electorate in the last Parliament, to the post of Sergeant-ab-Arms in the House of Representatives, vacated by the death of the late Colonel de Quincey. Colonel Frasor distinguished himself in the Maori war, nnd sat in Parliament from 1881 until 1893. The vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr E. D. O'Rorlce as.Bill Reader was tilled by the appointment of Mr Thomaa Bracken, the well known poet and journalist. Dr. Cahill, of Wellington, was appointed medical adviser to the Government Insurance Department, vice Dr. Henry, recently doceasea ; Dr. James, adviser and Health Officer; and Dr. Wilford, Vaccination Officer. In making these appointments, reductions were ellected upon' the amounts previously paid. ELECIRIC LIGHTING. Cabinet also accepted an offer made by the New Zealand Electric Light Company to light Parliament Buildings and the Government offices in Wellington. Parliament Buildings have hitherto been lit by machinery erected on the ground. • THE BALLANCE MEMORIAL. The Government have also promised tli° Ballanco Memorial Committee to take th° opinion of the House as to placing the monument in tho Parliament grounds. THE UNEMPLOYED. Cabinet had under its consideration a letter from Mr Tregear re the unemployed. He reported that things were in a bad state at Christchurch, and the Minister for Lands obtained authority for further expenditure in connection with roads at Cheviot. This will enable work for thirty or forty men to bo provided.
