Leger day was superbly lino, and thegreat race itself, one of tho finest that have been wibnessed in the North for many years. Backers who waited till Tuesday evening to invest their money on bhe Derby winnsr, did not do at all badly, us owing to the apparently unlimited commissions on for Mimi and Reverend, Common was easy in the market, even money, and in places 6 bo 5 being obtainable againsb him. This, however, did nob lasb. On Wednesday morning evens were exhausted, and finally 5 bo 4, and in places 6 to 4, was demanded by the ring. Mimi and Reverend wound up equal favouribios at 5 to 1, many thousands ot pounds of covering money going on the former at this rate. Orvieto, afber finding friends ab 8 to 1, rcbreated to 10 to 1 (offered). Then came Bosphorus at 33 to 1. Sb. Simon of bhe Rock ab 45 to 1, Cuttleistono at 66 tc 1, and Tho Admiral and Patrick Blue at 100 to 1. The nine runner 3 got off'to a capital start, Reverend making the running, and making it a cracker in the hope that Common might prove unable to stay. The raco was uneventful for a mile, when the pace told on Patrick Blue and Cuttlestone, who fell back, and the favourite, Bosphorus and St. Simon of the Rock began to ciose on Reverend, who led by two lengths. TheAd-iiral nexbeompoundod, andhalf-way round bhe final bend Orvieto and Mimi were done with. Reverend swept into the straight well ahead of Common, who was in turn clear of Col. North's outsider and Bosphorus. At this moment George Barrotb, moving uneasily on Common, took up his whip and began to ride. In an instant a wild war-whoop of " The ffi.wirite'H boat" went up from the ring.

and "29 to 1 Common " was offered in a dozen places. Reverend, indeed, seemed to have the race comfortably in hand, as his supporters jubilantly proclaimed. Bub the end was not yet. Running on under the whip with great gameness, Common stuck so closely to Reverend that at length Woodburn had to call on his charge for an extra effort. Then commenced a ding-dong struggle, oub of which the son of Isonomy's stamina brought him triumphantly. Stride by stride, amidst uproarious cheering, Common forged slowly to the front, ultimately winning amidst greab enthusiasm by a length, St. Simon of the Rock a neck behind. Reverend just defeated Bosphorous for the third place, Mimi was fifth, and Patrick stood last. After bhe race Common was sold to Mr Blundell Maplo for £15,000, tho largest sum ever paid for a bhoroughbrod in England. The monstrous bid of 5,500 guineas which Lord Marcus Beresford made for Memoir's yearling sister, La Flecho, last summer, was outdone ab Doncasber on Thursday, when Mr Blundell Maple (after purchasing Common for £15,000) gave 6,000 guineas for a yearling by St. Simon out of Plaisanberie. Better breeding it would, of course, be impossible to find, and as the colb looks good enough for anything, he may turn out a La Fleche or Priestess, rather than a Maximilian. Bub statistics, as we know, are nob promising.
