London, April 29. At the Newmarkeb First Spring Meeting to-day, the, race f_r the Two Thousand Guineas resulted :—

This is tho first great English " classic." race of tho season, and the result has ovi" dently boen a surprise. Peter Flower, the third horse, has been a strong winter favourite for the event. Tho firßt contest for the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes dates back to the year 1809, when Mr Wilson's eh c Wizard, by Sorcerer, secured the prizo. Tho subscribers for the inaugural event only numbered 23, and for bhe first halfcentury that was about the average entry ; but since then the subscribers varied from 52 to 118, the latter being the highest in. 1879. The list of winners for this classic ovonb include a greab many equine heroes which havo disbinguished themselves on tho course and in the paddock, and among them may bo mentioned such performers as Patille (winner of the Oaks, 1822), Cadland (Derby, 1828), Ray Middelton (Derby, 1836), Crucifix (Oaks, 1840), Cotherstono (Derby, 1843), Sir Tatton Sykes (St. Leger, 1846), Pitsford (giro of Lady Pitsford, The Pitsford, etc.), Stockwell (St. Leger, 1852), West Australian (Derby and St. Leger, 1853), The Marquis (St. Leger, 1862), Macaroni (Derby, 1863), the French horse Gladiateur (Derby and St. Leger, 1865), Lord Lyon (Derby and St. Leger, 1866), Pretender (Derby, 1869), Princo Charles (sire of Lochiel), Gang Forward (..ire of Hortonse), Camballo, Petrarch, Charibert, Petronel, Galliard, Ormonde, Enterprise and Ayrshire. Common is conjointly owned by Lord Alington and Sir F. Johnston, who will have probably won a large stake. Ho did noo starb as a two-year-old. Orvieto started seven times last season, winning three of his engagements ; and Peter Flower only met with one defeat out of the six times he started. Common, Orvieto, and Peter Flower aro each eueaged in the Epsom Derby, run on May 27th.
