News received from Rarotonga, Hervey Group, by the Island steamer Richmond this morning, states that a large proportion of the residents are in favour of a New Zealand Resident being appointed to the Group. Two petitions on the subject from two of the Queens of Rarotonga, Pa Ariki and Tinomana Ariki, arrived by the Richmond to be despatched to the Government. Queen Tinomana's petition is as follows : — " Rarotonga, August 27th, 1890. To the Government and Ministry of New Zealand: We send our greetings to you. We have heard that you are about to appoint a Consul or British Residenb for Rarotonga, Cook's Group. I express the hope that you will appoint Albert Glover to that position. (Signed) Queen Tinomana, Arorangi." Translated by J. M. Salmon, An Muru Palace, Arorangi. Mr Salmon is Tinomana's husband. Queen Pa's petition, from Ngotangua, runs in exactly the same terms, asking that Mr Glover be appointed Resident. Queen Pa ia the oldest chieftainess in Rarotonga, having been a Quoon for the past forty years. Some months ago Queen Makea, of Rarotonga, petitioned the Goverment in the same terms. _ Mr A.
